 Let Her Decide

Advocating for Better Healthcare for Breast Cancer Patients.

Women living with breast cancer deserve to feel comfortable and secure, and should be able to choose the option that works best for them following a mastectomy.

Today, if a woman has mastectomy surgery she has the option to choose reconstruction, off-the-shelf breast prosthesis, or go flat. For the majority of women, these options will provide a great solution. However, one option is missing. Currently custom breast prostheses are not reimbursable by Medicare, taking this option away for many women. The Let Her Decide campaign was created after interviewing many women recovering from breast cancer and realizing they didn't have all of the options available to them. No two women are the same and with each unique situation, she should be able to choose the solution that works best for her. Let Her Decide.

Did you know?

The breast is the only body part not covered as a customized replacement by Medicare?

Let Her Decide seeks to change the current Medicare guidelines to allow reimbursement for custom prostheses.

Each woman is beautiful and unique, and they deserve to choose the solution that meets their needs, including custom breast prostheses.

Reasons a woman may choose custom breast prosthesis:

  • For some women, reconstruction surgery is not an option based on medical history or diagnosis.
  • If not able to fit properly, an off-the-shelf prosthesis will move and shift causing constant adjustments to stay in the correct position.
  • An off-the-shelf prosthesis is not available to match the size, shape and/or skin tone of their remaining breast.
  • For some women, an off-the-shelf prosthesis is heavy and hot. This may cause back and shoulder injury from the weight.
  • After surgery, the surface of the chest wall is not always flat. Some women will have divots or concave areas that are difficult to fit with a flat-backed off-the-shelf prosthesis.

Medicare has already created a billing code and fee schedule. The only thing needed is legislation to allow coverage.

Since many health insurance companies follow Medicare guidelines, it's important for women everywhere to pass this legislation so breast cancer patients can be allowed to choose the solution that works best: reconstruction, off-the-shelf breast prosthesis or custom breast prosthesis.
