Home medical equipment (HME) providers play a critical, frontline role in providing accessible, quality care to those who rely on equipment such as oxygen, mobility equipment, and more, as well as minimizing hospitalizations. However, these providers continue to face reimbursement cuts, which makes it difficult for them to provide these essential services, which affect the access of those who rely on these equipment and services.
As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and the changes brought about by it, VGM has surveyed HME providers regarding the costs associated with delivering home medical equipment as well as additional information relative to recent operational challenges such as supply change issues, employee wages, product acquisition cost increases, freight cost increases, and personal protective equipment (PPE). We also inquired as to the current wage levels of three common positions (delivery technician, billing personnel, and office staff) due to reports of required overtime, higher employee benefits packages, and difficulty maintaining sufficient staffing.
Their responses demonstrated the total costs associated with providing equipment such as oxygen, hospital beds, mobility equipment, and more to patients’ homes both before and during the public health emergency.
HME providers are a driving force behind helping individuals maintain their mobility and independence. However, many providers face reimbursement cuts which directly impact beneficiaries, especially in rural America, who have trouble getting access to the equipment they need as a result of those cuts. If providers are unable to service patients due to insufficient payment relative to the cost of delivery, those who rely on these equipment and services will encounter even further access issues. We must show lawmakers that home medical equipment providers are a necessity and that they must be able to stay in business to continue supplying these essential services to you so you can continue to receive proper access to quality care and maintain your independence.
