This year, Congress added 100 new members. That means there are 100 new opportunities to make a change for those affected by poor health care policies.
If your elected official is a fresh face to the House or Senate, it is critical that you reach out to them now. They may be unaware of the everyday challenges faced by those who use home medical equipment, such as wheelchairs, home oxygen therapy, and CPAPs. You have the unique opportunity to educate them on how vital that equipment is to quality of life.
If you’re worried that your representative doesn’t care about your concerns, that is simply NOT true. Self-advocacy is very important. As your elected official, they need to hear about the issues that matter to you – and no one knows more about your needs than you!
But, before you reach out, here are three tips to help make sure your voice is heard:
- Prepare before you call. Write out what you want to say so that you can be clear and concise on the phone. Explain how the issue personally affects you, and identify what the “ask” is from the office.
- Identify yourself as a constituent. Share your name, the city, and the zip code of where you live. Let the receptionist know that you want to talk about a health care issue.
- Be courteous and respectful. Keep in mind that the person you’re speaking with is there to receive your concerns, not push back or argue with you. This person is a liaison for the legislator.
If you’d like to be connected to your elected official, you can contact the switchboard at 202-224-3121. All legislative offices are open, and staff is there to hear your concerns.
