Do you know what all of your options are following a mastectomy? Generally, you have four: surgical breast reconstruction, off-the-shelf breast prosthesis, custom breast prosthesis, or go flat. But one of these is not covered by Medicare. Currently, custom breast prostheses are not covered by Medicare, taking this option away from you. No two women are the same and with each unique situation, you should be able to choose the solution that works best for you. #LetHerDecide
Did you know?
The breast is one of the only body parts not covered as a custom prosthetic replacement by Medicare?
The Let Her Decide Campaign seeks to pass legislation for Medicare to cover custom breast prostheses.
Since many health insurance companies follow Medicare guidelines, it's important for women everywhere to pass this legislation so you can be allowed to choose the solution that works best for you.
Why custom breast prostheses might be an option for you:
- Surgical reconstruction is not an option based on your medical history or diagnosis.
- If not able to fit properly, an off-the-shelf prosthesis may move and shift requiring you to adjust it to stay in place.
- An off-the-shelf prosthesis may not be available to match the size, shape, and/or skin tone of your remaining breast.
- An off-the-shelf prosthesis may be heavy and hot. This may cause back and shoulder injury from the weight.
- After surgery, the surface of your chest wall may have divots or concave areas that are difficult to fit with a flat-backed off-the-shelf prosthesis.
